All by my self !

Hi, Every three days I have to change my inset. A inset is what my insulin comes through to go inside me. For the inset I have to have: a insulin cartridge, a needle, a new inset(a strange shaped object that has a clip with a needle and a long and THIN tube), a insulin tube(sort of looks like the normal liquid medicine bottle except smaller), my pump, and of course me!. This morning my mom let me do it by my self. I had to: take the old inset off and clean the old site. I took the old cartridge out, rewind the piston that pushes the insulin, fill a cartridge with insulin, place cartridge in pump, load cartridge, prime to make sure the tube worked, and place the inset in my site. It was my stomach this morning so it was pretty easy but still I did it my self!

broke again!

Hi, A few posts ago I mentioned my L.E.D screen went out on my pump, unfortunately it happened again! It was on Sunday February 28, I was out making a bow and arrow in the back-woods and I was going to see what time it was and my pump was black! So I had to go into the house. When I got home my pump was fine but my mom said I had to get another. When we were about to call the screen on my pump had lines of many different colors then it went completely black. On Tuesday (March 3rd) I got the new pump and we set it up all by ourselves! So far it has not broken (thankfully!). We learned to write down all the settings in the book! We are still working on a basal setting that keeps my blood sugars steady. With all this craziness, I have been both high and low. It will be interesting to see what my A1c will turn out in April.

Broke pump

Hi, A couple posts ago, I mentioned that I had been on the pump for about two months. About a week or so after that my LCD screen cracked on my meter! So the company had to send me a new one. And then the day we got the new some how the LCD screen on my pump also broke! So again the company sent me a new pump. Personally I think my mom has memory loss she forgets EVERYTHING! So we went to the doctors to have them help set up the new pump with the right settings and a pump representative helped us get things set right.

I want to share a few recipes. Here are a few: broccoli with cream cheese or salad dressing, celery with peanut butter or salad dressing, carrots with cream cheese or (this may sound weird but it tastes good )with peanut butter. These are all good (and tasty) low-carb recepies.

My bag

One of the things I do not like about being a diabetic is my bag. It gets heavy. Even with my new pump I still have to carry a purse full of stuff. I have to carry extra supplies for my pump, insulin pen and needles in case the pump fails, fruit leather and candy for times when I go low, alcohol swabs, and my meter. It is hard to keep track of all that stuff, so sometimes I forget things that I am supposed to have.

Another thing I forgot to add that is in my bag is trash and lots of it! When I loose something my mom dumps my stuff out and I have to clean it, and normally I find the thing I lost. My mom also makes me clean out my bag on a regular basis! I have all those strips for the meter for taking my blood glucose, wrappers, and other assorted stuff.

I have gone through around three to four bags. When I left the hospital they gave me a camouflage purse then the zipper came off so my grandma gave me a backpack. But that backpack took too many trips out to the field with me and got very dirty. Next I got a black and pink purse (also from Grandma) but it wore out with all the use and Velcro wore out so all the stuff kept falling out. Now I am using another bag grandma gave me, but mom still says the inside is a mess.

The hospital

It has been a while since I was diagnosed but these are a few things I remember.
When I was diagnosed they said they would have to keep me in the hospital so they sent me home to wait until they were ready. On our way to the hospital we rode in my dad's car but one of the tires was slightly flat when we left. So when we were about half way there it went flat! We had to call my uncle to use his car.

When we signed in they checked my blood sugar it was a little over 300. They put me in a regular room and gave me an IV (it was in my arm). After I got them I watched TV and then had a nap. Later they moved my bed to the pediatric ICU because my lab results were bad. Then for the second time they moved me to a regular room so I could take classes in the morning.

I slept in a hospital bed but for my parents there was a bed that folded out of the closet! I remember being woken up at night. Once they woke me up to check my blood sugar I don’t remember what it was but they gave me a shot and a glass of cold milk.

I went to take my first class about how to manage my diabetes. They showed me how to give myself a shot. For an example they used a half ball closed at the bottom. I learned how to check my blood sugar and give my own insulin shots.

Some people came to visit. After the visitors left I went to the play room and painted and did crafts. Other people called. And lots of people brought gifts, balloon, flowers and craft stuff. Everyone was praying for me.

For a while I couldn’t eat. Then for my first meal I had a hamburger and fries. The food they gave me was NASTY! But with the food came a plastic duck and the next two lunches I ate I had an animal on the platter. Also I had cold pizza and for dessert I had vanilla ice cream that was slightly melted. I was so hungry when I got out of the hospital.

Before Diabetes

Before I was diagnosed with diabetes:

My mom was familiar with the symptoms so she knew almost immediately what I had. Here are some of the symptoms mom noticed: frequent urination, grouchiness, and always being tiered. We own 2 farms, one we live on and the other (which was 10 minuets away) we plant on. Every time we drove to the farm or anywhere else I would fall asleep. Sometime in February 2008 mom took me to the doctors to have my blood glucose and urine checked. My blood glucose was 522 (in other words high).

Signs and Symptoms of diabetes:

Extreme thirst
Frequent urination
Sudden vision changes
Sugar in urine
Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath
Increased appetite
Sudden weight loss
Drowsiness, lethargy
Heavy, labored breathing
Stupor, unconsciousness

Cucumber sandwiches, and a tasty intro.

Pooh loves honey and so do I. I also love to eat and I love to cook, especially desserts.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in February 2008.

I have found several ways to still enjoy good food and cooking it. On this blog I want to share so that you may enjoy it too. After all, food with good nutrition and less sugar is good for everyone!

One of my favorite low-carb recipies is cucumber sandwiches.

You will need: Cucumber slices, cream cheese, dill, and crackers. Spread the cream cheese on the crackers then add a slice of cucumber on it, sprinkle shredded dill on top and enjoy!
